FAQ

Au contraire to what you might think, I get a lot of fan mail.  In these lovely notes are many questions. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions, hence the name of this page.

Are the views and opinions expressed on your blog strictly your own?

Haha, okay, so nobody ever asks me this.  But just in case you were wondering, this is my personal blog, and the views and opinions expressed here are strictly my own.  They do not represent the views of any of the publications I write for.

Are you really a geek?  Tell me a story of your geekiness.

Yes, I'm really a geek.  I have many tales of geekiness, but let's just leave it at this: I once got kicked out of the computer lab in first grade because I was "spending too much time staring at the screen."  At the time I got kicked out, I was busy pressing Ctrl + every other key, because I'd recently discovered keyboard shortcuts.  Yeah, keyboard shortcuts are weak sauce, but I was only six years old -- give me a break, okay?

What tech products do you use?

I do most of my work on a dual-screen desktop set-up.  It's old -- the shell is a Dell XPS 420, and I'm too lazy to update my processor so I'm still using an old quad-core Q9300.  I also have a couple of laptops: a 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro, a 2011 11-inch MacBook Air, and an old Sony VAIO from college.

As for phones -- I have way too many phones.  My main phone is a Samsung Galaxy Note II (on Verizon), but I've also got a basic flip phone for work calls, an iPhone 3G and an iPhone 4 (both without service), and I've been carrying around an HTC 8X for the purpose of reviewing Windows Phone 8 apps.  I have a Nexus 7 tablet and an original iPad, and my husband has an iPad Mini that I occasionally appropriate for the purpose of testing out Bluetooth 4.0 products.  I also have a TI-83 Plus.  I don't believe in fake calculators.

Are you really from Japan?  Are you Japanese?  Do you speak Japanese?

I was born and raised in Tokyo.  I am not Japanese.  I speak a decent amount of Japanese, but it's still a rather pathetic amount considering I spent a whopping 18 years in the country.

Why do you like Michigan sports teams?  What's the connection there?  Michigan sports teams suck.

My dad is from Michigan.  My mom is from West Virginia, and West Virginia has no professional sports teams.  And...you suck.

Where have you lived?

I lived in Tokyo, Japan for 18 years; Florence, Italy for one year; New York, New York for three and a half years; and San Jose, Calif. for two and a half years.  I currently live in San Jose.

Do you really play video games?  What's your Battle.net username?

I sure do, kids.  You can find me on Star Craft II -- Sarah / 871.  Recently I've been playing a lot of Guild Wars 2 and Street Fighter IV, however.

I'm married to this punk.
Are you single?  Will you marry me?

Weirdly, I get this question a lot.  And the answer is...no.  I am actually married.  To this guy.

Wanna know how we met?  Yeah you do!  Well, we met at work, but we really met when we went on a work outing to see the Broadway musical "Avenue Q."

During the intermission I asked him how old he was, and he told me (very sketchily, by the way) that he would tell me how old he was "in hex."  Then he proceeded to tell me he was "1D."  He looked all smirky and satisfied for about a second, until I said, "So, you're 29."  He was officially shocked, and all stuttery, like "What?!  You know hexadecimal?!  I...what...I...I have to marry you."

Then we got married.

Just kidding, we dated for a while and I continued to shock him with my geekiness awesomeness, and he proposed.
